Halifax is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia, and is one of Canada's major economic and cultural centres, a great place for travellers to visit and explore. It has achieved this reputation by balancing a range of attractions, with numerous contemporary entertainment-based activities that help to give the city both a traditional and a modern feel.

Halifax is the kind of destination that yields its best to visitors when traveling by car. It's a place that's laden with enchanting seascapes, landscapes and everyday life escapes, such as its numerous urban shopping areas, small artisan shops, grand museums and countless whale watching, walking, kayaking and cycling tours.

Here are some things to see and do while visiting the city.

Maritime Museum of the Atlantic

Nova Scotia is one of Canada's three maritime provinces, along with Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. The charming Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax was founded in 1948 and has over 30,000 artefacts and a remarkable collection of around 30,000 photos. Public galleries cover the evolution of Canada's maritime history, from Days of Sail through to the Canadian Navy via the Age of Steam, Small Craft and Shipwrecks. On the latter, the museum is also reputed to have the foremost collection of wooden artefacts from the famous wreck of the Titanic, including one of the few surviving deckchairs.

Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo

Taking place every year since 1979, this military-inspired show is a world-class display that has a reputation for being one of the most entertaining and theatrical of its kind, showcasing an exciting range of display teams and military bands. Run mainly by volunteers, the show is particularly welcoming of international visitors and a recurring theme is the 'Bond of Friendship'. Other festivals hosted by the city include the Atlantic Film Festival, Halifax Busker Festival and Greekfest.

Music and Theatre

Halifax hosts the Halifax Pop Explosion, a celebration of local bands and musicians, and regular performances called Shakespeare by the Sea, helping to cement its reputation as an active creative hub. Live music is a particularly strong feature of its busy nightlife scene. Performance venues of all sizes are dotted across the city, most notably perhaps being the Neptune Theatre, the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium and The Music Room, so you're spoilt for choice when it comes to live performances, whatever your tastes and preferences might be.
